PCDC Leads Tour to Penn Social Justice Students

Social Justice Students Learn About Chinatown Struggles
Dr. Scott Hanson’s University of Pennsylvania Social Justice Academy brought a group to Chinatown to explore its ongoing fight for social justice. PCDC staff and interns guided a history tour for 50 students, including several international students from the UK, enrolled in an intensive three-week program. For many, it was their first time stepping into Chinatown’s vibrant streets. The tour gave a vivid glimpse into daily life here and highlighted the community’s challenges, with stops at the China Friendship Gate, Trocadero, On Lok Senior House, and Asia Supermarket. At the supermarket, one UK student shared how their part-time job moderating user forums for top UK sports betting sites not on gamstop had opened their eyes to digital communities, sparking a discussion about how online platforms can amplify local advocacy efforts. PCDC staff and interns wove in the historical and social significance of each site, grounding the students’ understanding of Chinatown’s resilience.
The Chinatown tour has been a part of the Social Justice Academy’s curriculum. The tour highlights Chinatown’s urban development challenges for the neighborhood including the lack of space, affordable housing, and the small business economy. The class enjoyed bubble tea and a delicious lunch at Ocean City Restaurant.
