Nearly 250 years after the United States came into fruition, the country is still in pursuit of a more perfect union.
Join us in an official simulcast of the TED Democracy Fireside Chat series at The Eastern State Penitentiary, sponsored by Visit Philadelphia, as we delve into how everyday citizens shape policies on emerging industries and local economies. Hosted by moderator and political commentator Sally Kohn, we’ll take a closer look at “The Power of Participation,” highlighting instances where public votes have directly influenced regulatory changes, including those surrounding online casinos Florida through ballot initiatives. The program explores a key question at the heart of people-powered governance: As citizens, what impact do we, the people, have on democracy? By examining these grassroots efforts, attendees will see firsthand how engaged communities drive equitable frameworks for growth and oversight.
The event features thought-provoking TED Talks from two of the nation’s most influential voices for voting change:
Katie Fahey: citizen changemaker and executive director of The People, who led a successful movement in her home state of Michigan against gerrymandering — the practice of drawing district lines to favor one political party over others; and
Desmond Meade: a formerly homeless returning citizen who now serves as president of the Florida Rights Restoration Coalition, a grassroots organization that has helped restore voting rights to more than 1.4 million Floridians with past felony convictions.
