“History of Chinatown: An Enduring Legacy” Mural

In 2025, PCDC completed a powerful new public artwork to Chinatown’s neighborhood: “History of Chinatown: An Enduring Legacy” located at Man An House, a senior affordable living center co-developed by PCDC and Pennrose. The artist, Chenlin Cai, created the mural in collaboration with PCDC based on extensive community engagement in Chinatown—particularly senior citizens and students. The design highlights the stories of generations of Chinatown residents—workers, families, and community leaders—whose efforts have shaped and sustained the neighborhood. It blends history with contemporary life, capturing both the struggles and vibrancy of the community.

The new mural honors and builds upon the beloved “History of Chinatown” mural by Arturo Ho and his collaborators Giz, N. Phung, and H. Tran formerly at the corner of 10th and Winter Street. The original work was created in 1995 to celebrate Chinatown’s 125th Anniversary. The story unfolds through the journey of a family beginning with a laundryman—a tribute to the laundry that established Chinatown. It follows scenes of the family’s experiences of separation, reunification, and the nurturing of future generations, then culminates in Chinatown’s collective activism against the Vine Street Expressway.

Thirty years later, the updated piece offers both continuity and creative evolution, ensuring the story of Chinatown remains publicly visible for generations. This version retains the original core elements while introducing new imagery that reflects Chinatown’s evolving story. Chinatown community members continue to fight off development encroachments, but have also taken agency to build their own amenities — housing, parks, churches, schools — to address the needs of their ethnic immigrant community. The imagery stands as a bold testament to the history of struggle and resilience that shaped Philadelphia’s Chinatown and powerfully proclaims that our cultural community will continue to thrive for generations to come.

“Home is where the heart is, and Man An House reflects that spirit. Chinatown is more than a place, it is a living community with deep cultural roots. This mural brings that history to life in a way that is accessible to everyone, ensuring it is not forgotten."
