Chinatown Night Market Yè Shì Returns for 2017!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JUNE 19TH, 2017

Experience Chinatown Night Market Yè Shì!

Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Chinatown Development Corporation (PCDC) is proud to announce the return of one of the hottest events in Center City, the night market Yè Shì. On Thursday, October 12th, from 7:00PM to 11:00PM, the streets of Philadelphia’s Chinatown will be alive with food, vibrant music, and entertainment. Based on the popularized street food markets in East and Southeast Asia, PCDC will be bringing different flavors and activities to the Chinatown area for the seventh year in a row.

For the last several years, Chinatown has seen over 20,000 attendees flock to the area for the over 50 unique vendors who sell food, drinks, and arts and crafts, and live musical performances from the local community. Attendees can expect to see a unique blend of both Asian and Western foods.

“Philadelphia is increasingly becoming a place where food and cultural diversity are being highlighted, and the night market Yè Shì is the perfect example of this,” said John Chin, Executive Director of PCDC. “Chinatown has always been a place where differences met, and what better way to celebrate this diversity than through food and fun.”

Drawing from the Chinese language, Yèshì 夜市translates to “night market”. In places such as Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, night markets are known for their assortment of affordable, quick eats, and bustling activity. Chinatown’s Yè Shì is no different. By working with small business owners and other nonprofit organizations, the event celebrates Asian culture and heritage, and helps boost the local economy. The night market encourages entrepreneurship among a diverse business community, with over a third of previously participating small business owners being either minorities and/or women, and acts much like a testing ground for new vendors in the area.

Vendor applications will be available starting from June 28th and close on August 29th. Brick-and-mortar businesses within the area are encouraged to participate in the event. Food trucks are also encouraged to take part in the night market. Interested vendors can contact Lamei Zhang at lzhang@chinatown-pcdc.org.  Those looking to volunteer, please email lzhang@chinaown-pcdc.org.
