Chinatown Community Press

Chinatown Community Press

Established in 2018, The Chinatown Community Press is a youth-led publication incorporating photography; artwork such as painting, and pen-and-ink drawings; and stories about Chinatown and the immigrant experience. Youth participating in our PCDC Summer WorkReady internship program design and publish the Chinatown Community Press, which provides youth the opportunity to learn digital and print publishing skills while helping to preserve Chinatown’s history, cultural identity, and highlight the importance of the Chinese immigrant community in Philadelphia.

The Chinatown Community Press helps to meet the goals of our Chinatown Neighborhood Plan (2017) as storytelling and place-making are integral to engaging youth for historic, cultural, and neighborhood preservation. Submissions from youth included stories, articles, drawings, and paintings. Youth interns pored over these submissions and learned publishing software skills to help complete the project.

The Chinatown Community Press is Chinatown’s first literary magazine and leverages PCDC’s community connections to reach both the English-speaking and Chinese-speaking community.
