Main Street Program
In 2008, PCDC was awarded funds for a commercial corridor program through the PA Commerce Department. The Main Street Program has a 5-prong approach to economic development in commercial corridors: —————-
The Main Street Program’s purpose is to enhance Chinatown’s image as a commercial and tourist attraction, improve the environment and quality of life for all visitors and residents of Chinatown, and promote economic development and diversity in our community. The Main Street Committee is composed of business owners and stakeholders in Chinatown who meet every month to organize events and discuss commerce-related issues in the neighborhood.
Annual events include our well-known Chinese New Year Celebration each February, which feature lion dance parades, firecrackers, and special holiday food offerings. For Independence Day 2010, we held the first Chinatown Block Party. This successful summer festival featured a daylong program of performances on a 10×10 square foot stage, food and service vendors, and cameos from Miss America and Mayor Nutter!
Upcoming events include the Chinatown Restaurant Week, Sept. 26th – Oct. 3rd, during which 12 restaurants will be offering a special 3-course, prefixed menu.
