Chinatown Youth Lead Voter Registration

Chinatown Youth Lead Voter Registration

On July 1st, 6 volunteers from local Philadelphia high schools, participated in the Asian American Voter Registration Drive, a nonpartisan program initiated by Councilman David Oh’s office. Due to the low number of Asian registered voters, many
concerns of the Asian American community are left unheard. The purpose of the drive was to increase the number of Asian voters.

The targeted neighborhood for that day was in the Northeast where there is a significant number of Asian American residents. Due to the time of day, many Asian parents were out for work. Many residents were green card holders and not citizens yet, which meant they could not register to vote. Despite the hot weather, volunteers were able to register two voters that day.

Volunteers encouraged people to register to vote by explaining the importance of voting, such as having the opportunity to demand the increase of Asian American representation in leadership and  government.
